Hi everyone, I'm starting out and trying to make my own media mix of 1:1 peat and silica sand, but I'm not sure if the sand I have is too fine. I'll post a couple pics for reference. This mix will be for Utricularia and sundews Thank you!

Too fine. It should look and feel really gritty, mesh size ~ 12, maybe 1.6 mm across.

I've been working with this type of sand for over 5 years now. It is alright (especially fr utric) if you can't get your hands on coarser sand but like Lloyd states, for better drainage, more gritty would be better.

Ahh, I figured :\
I'll try to look for larger grained sand or go with perlite then. Thanks!

As Shoggoths mentioned, I used that sand for years without a lot of problems. I do think you will be more than happy when you are able to switch.

Actually, I have plenty of styrofoam. Has anyone used this or would recommend this as a perlite substitute? I can imagine it holds temperature a bit differently though.

Perlite holds water, styrofoam doesn't. Also styrofoam is evil.
