As much as I detest the people who run eBay, I think it's pretty safe.

I was looking at aliexpress. The variety of seeds and plants is amazing. The pictures are mainly the right species although often the wrong species, genus and family. The crazy variety, weird captions (radiation comes up a lot), inaccurate pictures and stupidly low prices seem to scream: "Stupid fool with too much money and no brains, give me your money and I will send you spurious, useless things. I do not even respect you enough to send nothing because then you will think it got lost in the mail and you will not regret your imbecility."
I must admit that I'm really tempted to try something for a few bucks just to see what happens.

Has anyone bought from aliexpress.com ? I think it all depend on what you buy. One of my fellow co-worker buys all the car stuff he's selling on ebay from them and never had problem. I never dealt with them before but they have pumice so if somebody is in for a group order, it could be cool

I've never heard of aliexpress, but a quick look suggests it is almost entirely bunk. Nearly every photo is stolen from a quick internet search, the descriptions don't match the photos, or are internally false. Looks like lots of bad mojo to me!
eBay is the wild west for purchasers. There are some amazing things to be had there, which you simply can't get anywhere else. I have some friends with better plant collections that professional gardens, and they off load surplus divisions on eBay exclusively. That said, there are a lot of sketchy dealers on eBay too. Lloyds "caveat emptor" post is important for eBay too! Look for the clues to which sellers are genuine and which are charlatans.

I looked and looked at something I might want to buy. After a LOT of looking, I've come to the conclusion that it may indeed be possible to buy seeds of the specified species. The prices may even be Ok, including shipping. However there is so much obvious complete scamming going on that even I, a fairly hard core internet buyer, wouldn't bother taking a chance.

My parents have bought things from aliexpress. I don't know if I would buy seeds, but hard goods are pretty safe. I think pots and things are a pretty safe bet, but I wouldn't expect them to ship quickly.
I have heard of people ordering seeds and it ended up just being grass seeds. Be wary of super cheap seeds that seem too good to be true.

I bought lotus seeds a few weeks ago from aliexpress and from ebay. Both would have come from China. I got my order from ebay. I am still waiting for my order from aliexpress. I received a pack of adenium seeds (they look like adenium) form china and its not my order number on the label, but it was addressed to me. Emailed the seller and they said it wasn't from them. Seller extended my 'buyer protection.' Still waiting for my seeds as of today. My understanding is the way ali works is when you pay, ali holds onto the payment until you confirm you've received the goods.
I'd definitely go with ebay over aliexpress any day. I didn't have very much luck buying authentic seeds (especially the commercially packaged ones) when I was in Hong Kong a few years ago.

I have bought lots of things off of Aliexpress and never had a problem. They do not release payment to the vendor until you confirm that you received the goods. Your money is protected better than Ebay because Aliexpress holds the money and provides the refund. They do not have to chase after the vendor. However, I have never purchased seeds. I would be extremely leery about buying any seeds from China. Read this
