Hiya to all of you! I'm 21-year-old girl that studies a degree programme in hortuculture at HAMK university. I'm studying my 3rd year and I have one year left. Since I haven't graduated yet my plants grow beside my parents' house in Lahti. Hardiness zone of the city is 5b. We tend to have very cold winters down to -30C with prelonged freezes and daylight hours down to 5. When its summer temperatures are normally around 20-25C and we get 19 hours of light. Winter starts in November and our growing season begins late April. I grow various species of carnivores and humbly said I have the biggest carnivorous plant collection in our country. My growlist consists mostly on Nepenthes and Sarracenia. I have many terrariums in my own room therre and my highland nep setup lies in our basement. I have grown Sarracenia and Darlingtonia from seed and also crossbread and produced my own Nepenthes seedlings. My ourdoor carnivores grow in our backyard in summer months and I move them to basement when it comes to winter. However I'm interested in overwinterizing them outside in order to minimize used space in the basement and since the number of my plants has increased a bit since I started in 2009. I've been strolling around CPUK forum for years but I thought it should be nice to meet people that grow their plants in the same conditions I wish I could learn from you guys how you grow your plants to perfection. Cheers and nice to meet you! Siru My blog: kannukasviblogi.blogspot.fi/Instagram: snownyy CPUK: snowwy

Welcome to OCPS Snowny. I do not believe we have any other members as far north as you. The hardiness zone I live in is around 9. We will welcome your input on growing cps in the cold climate of Finland!

This winter you could mulch part of your garden with netting covered with long pine needles. Use a temperature logger or long probe to get an idea of the soil surface temperatures. If the temperatures are reliably -3 to +3°C, temperate plants will be OK. A good snow cover is best, which should be easy in Finland.

Hyvää päivää Siru - Welcome to the friendliest place for CP growers on the internet! I live in the States and am here for the same reason you - to share experience with people who grow CP in similar conditions. I live in a place not unlike Finland (in fact a lot of Finns settled nearby). We are zone 4b for cold and 5 for heat (-30C in the winter and 30-45 days above 30C/yr). The OCPS is the place when it comes to learning for experienced and friendly CP growers how to be successful in extreme climates. It looks like you are plenty successful, so I am sure your advice will be welcomed warmly.

Welcome aboard snowny! I'm in Vancouver, British Columbia and we don't get any real winter here. Snow lasts a day - maybe. There are also the occasional cold snaps though. Some years the cherry trees blossom in February! There are great people here. Cheers

Kiitos paljon kaikille! Thanks to all of you! It's lovely to get such warm compliments. I still struggle with our winter since temps in our basement are a bit too warm (5-8C) so my plants don't tend to go into deep dormancy. Winter is also quite long here so plants start waking too early. However I'm very interested in trying to winter them in a styrofoam box in our greenhouse or tool shed.
