Hard to explain the smell, an almost pungent, almost chemical, almost skunky odour. Not horrible but not nice.

For some reason I'm always lazy about pictures. I always remember the process as being more tedious than it really is. I'll try to be better in the future :-)
The tomatoes look really good and taste great too. Much better than the boring store bought tomatoes this year except for the great cherry tomatoes I got at a farmer's market. I have to confess I had a LOT of blossom end rot early on :-(
