One way quickly to determine whether the bugs are springtail is to flood the soil. Springtails float on water, and they jump when they are shocked.

The tan ones in the last picture look like amblyseius or some other type of predatory mite. They feed on smaller mites and other creatures which may seek to infest your plants, so I've always welcomed them. Well that is good to know. my fig tree was the first to have them and neam oil seems to have no affect on themSo good to know.

Iv had a pot swimming with what i thought was mites in the soil Was in a pot of drosera seeds none came up ...does any stage of these" benificial" bugs eat seeds or seedlings? No, base on what I know springtails are harmless to seeds and seedlings!

oh man... i love that purple globular type. please make cultures... would love to trade for some. i used to have a lot of these i lost them when i had to bombard the setup with insecticides against scale/mites. but.... the other day i saw this guy. He's back... I love these spotted guys... so cute. i am hoping there are more around....and they multiply before eventually finding their way inside the pitchers. lol

Was watching the CBC's story tonight on head lice in Toronto public schools and when they showed a close up macro shot of a head lice...
...was thinking they sure were cute...look just like a springtail...
...except lice can't jump!

Baaah....,lice ......makes my skin crawl. lol BUT...it reminds me of the reapers from mass effect. If lice were this big...they would surely do this to our cities.

LOL! Baaah....,lice ......makes my skin crawl. lol Haha, that would be the normal response and used to be my response too... ...but I've seen so many tropical springtails magnified close up, that the resemblance to head lice is eerie... ...lice stick to their high wire act, tenaciously clinging by a hair, while springtails do more acrobatic aerial tricks. dvg
