So before I fell in love with carnivorous plants there were orchids. I started collecting them two years ago. Luckily my growing space is somewhat limited, otherwise I'd probably have another dozen in the collection.
In the interest of keeping the Orchid discussion active and lively, I'll add to this thread once or twice a week with pictures and profiles of other orchids in my collection.
hebtwo's orchids:
- NOID Phalaenopsis 1 (A thread about my NOID Phal 1)
- NOID Phalaenopsis 2
- Phalaenopsis schilleriana
- Oncidium Heaven Scent 'Redolence'
- Paphiopedilum Iantha Stage
- Laelia purpurata
- Slc. Tutankamen 'Pop' AM/AOS
- Renanthera Amayani
- Zygoneria Adelaide Meadows 'Eli'
Deceased:
- Dendrobium loddigesii
---
Today's orchid of interest is:
Phalaenopsis schilleriana (AOS - Phalaenopsis schilleriana)
This is the only true species orchid I have. I bought it at the orchid show in February from Forestview Gardens (a BC grower). It came to me with two leaves and two healthy roots.
I'm not a big fan of moss as an orchid medium, so I did a repot immediately into a clay pot with bark.
Going from a nice BC greenhouse to a cold Ontario southern window the poor thing had a bit of transplant shock and lost one of it's original leaves. But not to worry, it's since grown a new one.
The big appeal for me to buy a Phal. schilleriana was the mottled pattern on the leaf. I do love phal flowers, but it's such a popular plant that it get's kind of boring to look at when not blooming. Luckily this species has really charming leaves and is a pleasure all year round.
I've read that mottling on these will become more intense and vibrant based on the amount of sun they receive, so this summer has been an experiment with just how much is enough. I started it off pretty strong and have since dialed it down as the other remaining original leaf had started to suffer as a result. The new leaf it grew on the other hand has very nice mottling.
Still very small:

And finally, a glimpse into the possible future of this little guy:
