Most of you know this for orchids to grow offshoots. I have a number of plants that I'm trying to encourage dormant meristems to get a more bushy plant. For instance my Acacia really wants to be a tree and grow up and up which would be impossible for me. No matter how much I nipped the upper buds it kept growing more and refused to grow from lower down the plant. So after doing a bit of research I mixed some BAP in lanolin paste and after a month and 2 applications I finally noticed the first lower bud is growing. Success! Also one of my Pereskia is growing a lower meristem. I'm trying it on a number of plants that I want to encourage a more compact bushy habitus.
Fun with plant hormones.

Euphorbia mauritanica is growing new branches where I put the paste. It responded the quickest and with the most growth, probably because it is the most thin skinned.

I have a friend here in my City that makes the Keiki past he makes many of my T/c media's too , cleaver guy , he was explaining how it works ,chemically and in Chemistry terms , i nodded my head a lot and smiled a lot to but got that it works extremely well on many areas of bud and node growth and stem growth as well it seems .

I'm using BAP 2% in Lanolin. Do you know the ingredients for his pastes?

I agree with snapper! What are you talking about when you say BAP 2% in Lanolin? And is there any post that would give a solid understanding what TC is.

Thanks for the reminder, Lloyd. I just bought a little bit of this to try with my Nepenthes. Perhaps it will make propagating the tougher species a bit easier. Worth a try, anyways..!

Al Bickell showed me this trick: if you have the growing point of a Nep below the soil level (not buried in the soil), the same shoot will make an offshoot between the soil and the point where the shoot bends. This is easy to do in a hanging basket/pot.

So eliminating some apical meristems on the shoot system of your Acacia didn't encourage the lower buds? Funny, it always works for me when I try to encourage bushier growth. Perhaps try to use some sort of auxin hormone on the dormant meristems? Usually apical dominance stops lateral growth on plants, but maybe there might not be enough auxin to stimulate the dormant meristems.
Funny story: Once I cut off the growth point of a young nepenthes ventrata to see if it would encourage basals. End result: 4 basals and two growth points from the cut off growth point. Perhaps a new way for propagating nepenthes? Haha, I'm way too chicken to cut off the growth point of my rarer hybrids and species.

My acacia absolutely refuses to activate lower meristems. I've been nipping off every shoot for over a year and it wouldn't grow anything less than an inch or so from the top. Finally with the 2% BAP in Lanolin, I've got some lower growth going.

Ever try mixing BAP with some sort of synthetic auxin? BAP is a synthetic cytokinin (I think) and it should work perfectly with an auxin (perhaps NAA?).

Auxins should stimulate roots and inhibit shoots. I will eventually try pastes with GA3 and NAA.
