I've been trying to germinate Exocarpus sparteus for a while. My fault? I tried an experiment using TTC (the seed viability test chemical, not the "Better Way") to check my seeds. I used 3 year old Mung bean seeds and my recent purchase of Exocarpus. Nicked the seed coats, soaked for 48 hours in tap water, split the seeds in various ways and soaked for 24 hours in 0.3% w/v TTC in tapwater. The Mung beans were totally white and the Exocarpus were brown, yellow or white before staining. As you can see the Mungs stained red but the Exocarpus didn't stain at all. Dead? I guess I'll just nick the seed coats and throw every seed growth enhancer at them but I don't have much hope. The big seeds are Mung and the little ones Exocarpus.

I never try those.
From Internet : The seeds are much favoured by birds from parrots to emus, who swallow the succulent fruit and the seed to spread the latter via their droppings.
Did you try to mimic this behavior ? I don't know for sure but surely there's some kind of acid seed treatment protocol somewhere to do it.

Did you try to mimic this behavior ? I hope you're not suggesting that we try to spread the seeds via our droppings.

I would try it but you can't bring seeds back from the dead.

If I ate the seeds, I'd be an emu-lator.

Did you try to mimic this behavior ? I hope you're not suggesting that we try to spread the seeds via our droppings. Sometime, you have to do what it takes to get what you want After all, those seeds are edible. But no, I referred to method like the sulfuric acid seeds scarification one.

So far I've tried boiling water, removing the seed coat, pre-soaks, kinetin, GA3, thiourea and smoke. I think these seeds are just not viable. I'll keep trying until they're all moldy.

Well you have another set of eyes watching for ideas for that. Best of luck to you.
