Hey Everyone! This is a few weeks late, but I'm happy to announce that my guide to growing carnivorous plants, Cultivating Carnivorous Plants, has been published! I tried to make my book more comprehensive than anything else out there. To that end, I included full chapters on a number of genera commonly glossed over in growing guides for carnivorous plants. I also added in tables at the end of chapters which include lists of all known species and important information about growing them. In total, Cultivating Carnivorous Plants includes growing guides and information chapters on: Aldrovanda, Brocchinia, Catopsis, Cephalotus, Darlingtonia, Dionaea, Drosera, Drosophyllum, Genlisea, Heliamphora, Nepenthes, Pinguicula, Roridula, Sarracenia, Triphyophyllum, and Utricularia. I was very happy with the end result and just wanted to share the news. Thanks! -Natch

Thanks! I really do feel most akin to you guys since I practically live in your country. (I'm only about 40 miles from the border!). I'm sure I'm closer to some of you than the majority of growers here.

If Justin thinks your book is worthwhile, how could I resist? I just bought it from Amazon.com.

Thanks Lloyd and Shoggoths! Aldrovanda is such a fickle plant, in my experience. I couldn't get the turions through winter last year. I'm not yet sure if they made it this time. (Of course, this year, my tank also exploded, so I'm not sure I was successful in rescuing it. I guess we'll see in a few weeks).

Hey Dennis, I don't really go into alternatives for perlite, except sand. I know others have had some success with vermiculite. I've (briefly) used hydroponic clay, which seems to be an okay alternative. I guess the real question is what do you have access to?

Hi Natch - I'll second Lloyd; if Justin thinks it will be worthwhile, I'll add it to by "to get" list.
Do you know what Aldrovanda population you have? I am curious because I have thus far found getting the turions through the winter to be fairly straight forward - haven't lost one yet. I've been passing a particularly easy clone around here, and everyone has had success, with the turions at least. I'm wondering if you have a particularly finicky clone?
Shogg - If you are having trouble with your Aldrovanda after this season, let me know and I'll send you some turions.

Aquarium gravel, depending what's in it, can work well.
Apoplast, I'm not sure. I did get it from a grower in TX. He has it work very well. My guess is that its from a warmer area originally. They seemed to form without too much of an issue, but, then again, not all of them formed correctly. I'm wondering if I let them get too cold.

Hi Natch - I've got to give a turion forming Ozzie population I have a good go-round in the cold. But my favorite strain is from a Polish lake and I've frozen it accidentally, though lightly. They all came through fine. But there may very well be differences between populations for sure. Crosses between turion forming and non-turion forming populations might produce interesting results. The best people to ask would probably be Adam or Kamil. I don't know that Adam has done any cold tolerance experiments; he likely doesn't have the climate anyhow. Kamil may know though. Sorry I can't be of more help. Interesting to discuss though, thanks!

The book came today, 5 days from Amazon.com. I just skimmed through it. Great pictures & good quality publishing. I'll give a better review when I have time to actually read it.
