So last week we had company over. The kids that were over were interested in seeing my plants, so I was showing them some flytraps and stuff but the only plants (VFTs) I had to show were small and just out of dormancy. Since I had much bigger plants in the dormancy chamber in the back garage, I rushed out and brought some in trying not to keep them waiting, but it backfired unfortunately. I left the chamber door open thinking I would be bringing the plants back right after, but it slipped my mind; I guess because I was more focused on keeping them occupied. I didn't remember until the next day but it was too late - all of the flytraps I left in the chamber froze to death, including these seedlings. Luckily I brought in most of the flytrap collection to show them, but I lost all of my plants from FTS and the last BCP order which include red-purple, megatraps, long red fingers, B52 x BCP giant, paradisia, and the list goes on. I'm more devastated by the loss of the flytrap seedlings though. I fed them very often using needles and toothpicks, and anyone who has done that knows how much time it can take for a lot of seedlings. I was really looking forward to growing them to maturity.. Understandably I don't think I am going to grow VFT's from seed for a while. I also lost all of my temperate Drosera, a bunch of Sarracenia are set back or dead, and it looks like the two ping species I had are gone too. The Sarracenia suffered the least, but I will not know how bad the damage really is until spring. It could have been a lot worse. I can get most of the flytraps a I lost back but it's not cheap. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this

That's a serious bummer...I can see myself doing the same thing. You're too good of a grower and photographer to give up on VFT seedlings, I'd be happy to send you some interesting VFT seedlings in the coming months

...that is brutal!!! I can also see myself doing the same. I have a big family and everyone always wants to see my plants. Not to worry Devon, I also have tons of VFT seedlings I can send you to help you lick your wounds. Cheers!

My stuff in the garage is frozen solid (~-5C) for months at a time. Starr's and dews are usually good, VFT'S are often good, pings so-so. It could be bad but don't throw stuff out. Let the chamber go back to the regular temp. If it goes above 3-5C, take the plants outside for rain, sun and good air flow. Put them back on cold nights. Good luck.

Thanks for the offers Amanitovirosa and Roraima, but it is not the same as growing your own genetically unique plants. Keep your seedlings and watch them grow up. Good luck. VFT's are okay freezing if they are in a deep dormancy and kept a little more on the dry side yes, but that is not the case. The plants in the chamber didn't get to a deep dormancy because they get light from the window inside, and most of the flytraps were placed in there within the last two months. I also had recently watered the plants before the freezing, and when they froze it was -26C. They were like ice cubes when i got to them. I unpotted many of them after they had thawed to check the bulbs, and they have completely turned to mush. Any signs of life would be white-ish and firm. I've had VFT's recover from freezing before and even from being left in the fridge for two years, so I know what to look for when it comes to signs of life in VFT's. Thanks for the reassurance though. I will post an update in spring; I am sure many of the Sarracenia are fine.

Sorry to hear about that Devon. Maybe we need to have a quarterly wake for plants that are no longer with us.

That does sound bad. Hopefully you'll get some good growth from some of the plants in the spring.

I got a very large Ping Aphrodite from Lane unwrapping it it split so I planted both each was doing well but my brother was visiting and had the 2 cats from hell I went out and left the door open only to come back to both Pings dug up and ate! I salvaged a leaf and got a baby plant but it died in a few weeks. I was hoping it was poisonous and would kill thecats...no damn luck they never even got sick

I'm new to the CP world and haven't got much of anything yet, but don't give up! When i get some plants going, and healthy enough to ship i would gladly help out. Maybe in the spring when you know for sure what survived and what didn't you could make a list of what is needed, and I could try to help more specifically
