I've decided to poke my head into the world of parasitic plants. Anybody know a small, relatively simple species that I could grow? I was thinking dodder, but I can't seem to find them for sale. Probably because they are such a problem in some areas.

Parasitic plants can be hard. Dodder is ugly and too dangerous to grow. I recommend one of the Canadian louseworts. They are attractive, native, with both the host and parasite easy to grow. Take seeds of both and overwinter them in a pot outside. I've decided to poke my head into the world of parasitic plants. Anybody know a small, relatively simple species that I could grow? They seem pretty interesting, I'll keep my eye out for some. Know any fully parasitic plants that are not very hard to cultivate? I browsed eBay for parasitic plant seeds and didn't find many vendors. Maybe I'll grow a mistletoe.

Forget mistletoe for now. If you want you can join me in a try for some in early spring. I've been trying parasitic plants for years-compared to them growing orchids in tissue culture is easy! If you have any ideas, post so we can both try. If I have any successes, I will post them.
Dodder besides being really ugly is horribly invasive and illegal to import, I think.

Where do you get your seeds Lloyd? I am having a hard time finding any vendors. I should probably start some host plants.
Dodder is a very interesting parasite IMO, too bad it's very uncontrollable.

Tell me what kind of plants you want. I've done a lot of research and work (most unsuccessfully) on hosts/vendors/germination/growing. I'll tell you whatever I can and maybe we can work together. I may try some louseworts for next spring. You can buy some tropical dodder which would be safe. We can also co-operate on ordering seeds. Any ideas, let me know.
