Hey Everyone, For those of you who aren't aware, this year has been a rather bad one for the poaching of Venus Flytraps from the wild with disturbingly large numbers being illegally collected. The Governor of North Carolina will be presented with a bill in December, which if signed, will make poaching venus flytraps a felony. Here's a petition started by various members of the CP conservation community: www.change.org/p/gov-patrick-mccrory-support-and-pass-section-52-of-senate-bill-734-statewide-venus-flytrap-penalties#Please sign it if you can, it'll help show the Governor that there's lots of worldwide interest in the Venus Flytrap. Thanks, Gabriel

I wonder if this bill would change their CITES classification to a class 1 ?
I hope it doesn't go the way of prohibition making it even more profitable to poach. People that have respect for these plants aren't who this targets. Its a shame that they would have to try this route.

People that have respect for these plants aren't who this targets. Its a shame that they would have to try this route. The CITES classification will remain unchanged by this bill, those are determined by a different non-governmental organization. Luckily for the flytraps, it appears that the majority of the illegal trade in them has been people pulling up plants for the thousands and selling them at low cost to nurseries and distribution centres around the Wilmington area. Hopefully the harsher penalties from this bill (up to 25 months in prison!) will make the risk too high for those willing to poach the plants. So far as I, or anyone else seems to know, there's no real want for wild collected flytraps in the CP community, so there shouldn't be a typical increase in value that comes with prohibition, unless the nurseries are willing to increase their price, which I don't expect will happen.

there should be costly fines for poachers and anyone selling a lot cheap needs to be investigated or prove they have a nursery for these and provide a license I don't see how they are kept since they got 101 rules or they die or maybe they throw out plants with a black trap or leaf

I suppose you can't get "vft'd" so there probably isn't much worry...

You can buy them in plastic clamshells at Loblaws for about $6. They would have to sell them quickly before they died. Probably at the road side. How many could you sell? For how much? To whom? It would be a lot more lucrative, easier and safer to distribute advertising flyers.

Maybe there are hardcore underground collectors looking for new bloodlines. Who knows they could have the genes to make something to rival even Korean Melody Shark. The comments under the article are interesting.
