When I'm bored at work, I sometimes surf the net. Of course, one of my favourite sites is the OCPS.proboards78. One of my colleagues at work saw what I was looking at today and thought I was crazy. I prefer to think of myself as a harmless eccentric.

Well most of the time, and when there's people with me there like what are you reading and they look at you so strangely when you answer them a Carnivorous plant book why?... Lol! But hey that's how I got titom interested in CP's and well my girlfriend just finds them cool but she just recently started. (Capensis and some "Lake badgerup") Anyway! Cya

my parents just shake their head at me, but thankfully most of my friends were either eccentric to begin with or plant people from horticulture, so they don't think too much on it. If anything they think my frogs are much odder. My boyfriend has even been indiferent to them, mind you, when he was pestering me about what I want for christmas, I told him a gift certificate from hawian botanicals or kheens, and gave him the websites, all I got once he was checking them out is...your sure not like most women I know, and definately not like anyone I've dated before... do you try for the most...um...unique...hobbies? I have been considered an "odd" fellow for a very long time- the music, food and movies I like are stuff most folks have never even heard of , so anyone finding out that I grow CPs is usually more curious than surprised the classic exchange ME-"I grow Carnivorous plants" THEM- "Oh, you mean Venus Flytraps" ME- "uhhh.. yeah, I have one or two of those, but I like the other ones more" THEM-"Oh, I thought it was only flytraps, there's more??" ME- "Yep" (at which point I'll try to change the subject- you try describing a Cephalotus or a Nepenthes to someone using only words and some hand gestures!!) But most folks I know and many I meet are genuinely interested in hearing a little bit about them... And I am lucky, Ange actually likes them, tho she finds sundews rather boring (her "holy grail" CP is a green and white S.leucophylla of some sort) The first time I ever showed her a sundew (actually a decent sized D.filiformis) her reaction was "that's IT?? That's all they are?" and that has not changed too much and really eccentricity is no big deal, first-time visitors usually ask if we have kids or something cos there's action figures all over the house- they are harder to explain, I think, than any plant ever could be

Insectivore: I'm surprised you failed, sounds like you're taking stuff you find boring. Hopefully one day you'll study something you like and you'll be surprised how well you do.
Sib: I like telling people about my wingless fruit flies, that really makes them think I'm weird.
Mabudon: My wife is the same way about sundews; too gooey and messy (especially D. filiformis), and she likes the S. leukophylla and flowering pings the best.

lol! I thought that sundews were kinda mediocre too....but yesterday I carefully took the little babies that I got from curlingguy and the little warrior who has probably resented as a seed in the peat moss and germinated right literally under my very noses. . I put them into a new pot exposing to more light. The pictures will come soon..but now I reallly find sundews cute. atleast the small ones.

I feed them to my plants and my fish. They are just the right size for little pings and not ugly looking. The fish love them especially the barbs and angels that snap at the little doo-dad I pick them up with.

what doo-dad might that be? I just use large tweezers for all my live food... what size are the wingless fruitflies in comparison the the flightless fruit flies (D. Hydei)? Also do you just buy replacement cultures? or have your own system? I find buying the cultures too expensive to do too often. Thanks, Sib

I use a plastic ear curette (medical for ear cleaning device). It's long and has a little sort of ring at the end just right for picking up a few flies especially if it's a bit wet. I bought these flies at Wards, I forget the species. They're really easy to raise and seem the regular size. I bought 35 and now have at least hundreds in two pint mason jars. I found a really easy recipe for food on the net if you're interested. I even gave a culture to a friend.

The food is really easy. They're D. melanogaster by the way. I found this recipe on the net: www.amphibiancare.com/frogs/articles/fruitflies.htmlI use the easier recipe although the harder one would be fairly easy once you bought a few food items. I made one batch of it and froze it. Whenever I need some more I just scoop out a tbsp. or two and glob it on the bottom of a mason jar. The flies go crazy on it. It's very cheap and lasts a long time. If you can wait till the spring, I can send you a culture. By the way, some sites say you have to be careful about microbial overgrowth. However my cultures seem to have no bacteria or fungi at all. The fruitflies seem to give off a sort of fruity smell (not objectionable) which could be a natural antibiotic. I just noticed a crazy thing: I'm trying to post the word "t-a-b-l-e-s-p-o-o-n" but it posts as tablespoon. This is weird!

I'm gonna turn off the sensor, it changes more correct words to odd things, then we ever get curse words! Just scanned the site, what a great one! Which recipie do you use? dose it smell? Just curious, Thanks, Sib
