This season I'm doing battle with red spider mites on my vft's. This is the first time in my history with CP's that i've had to deal with an industrial mite which resists both of the commonly applied miticides. It has been a frustrating task and a charming experience on a whole. They were introduced 'mysteriously' with a spring shipment of new unquarantined plant material and have infested 80% of my outside collection. It is a Avid and Forbid resistant strain of the mite which frustrates me even further.
All this frustration aside I went out today in my search for the materials suggested by H2o ad other members for treatment. Eucalyptus oil, mineral oil and neem oil being the three mite fighting properties. Remembering that Neem oil has always been on the shelf where I work it was written off as an easy pick up.
Nope, horticultural grade neem oil has been pulled by the CIFA. They failed to classify it as a 'pesticide' and so it is not legally to be sold as one. Sooo if you need neem you have to pay an arm and a leg in Canada for the next little while. At least until the suppliers re licence their product. You can find it at most health food stores, insane that a littttttle tiny 2oz bottle runs you $17.99 now. The same 750ml bottle sold for plants was about $17.99 less than 6 months ago.
Hope all is well with everyone!

You can still get a "leaf shine" product at some garden centres that ciontains neem oil. The rule is they cannot sell it as a pesticide - it's fine to sell it as leaf shine. I get mine from a cosmetics supply in Mississauga: www.newdirectionsaromatics.ca/neem-carrier-oil-p-305.html$12 for one litre and you can order some essential oils and save more $ as well!

The government is also blocking the import of Neem Oil for leaf shine because they know what people are using it for. I've talked to a few supplier and they've all been having the same problem. You can still get it if you know who to talk to. Retailers just aren't putting it on the shelf and telling everyone they have it.
It's ridiculous what they're doing and those massive pesticide companies are sure playing a role in the government influence.

I bought a bottle of the pure stuff at a health food store years ago-a waxy semi-solid that I keep in the fridge. It seems to last forever and a little goes a long way. Wasn't pricy at all.
Eucalyptus oil should be the best against spider mites. Drowning the devils should help, they hate humidity. I'm surprised that they would be a problem outside.
