TDS is total disolved Solids A TDS meter measures the impurities in water for example tap water (these meters can be found online but my guess is anyplace selling goldfish might sell these meters too...they are not expensive. CP's can tolerate some tap water it the TDS shows a low enough reading ( I would ask Lloyd,I think he tested the tap water in his area and may have info concerning these meters or where to get one. You probably will need to periodacally test standing rainwater.

It's tool to measure the total dissolved solids in water. For CP's, you would want to water them with water containing less than 50 ppm of dissolved solids. Rain water is usually alright, but it must fall into a container first without touching anything that will raise the concentration of the water. Water falling from the roof are mostly inadequate for CP's for instance.

The water on my greenhouse will come into contact with plastic only. polycarbonate roof, plastic eavestrough, plastic plumbing pipe into an enclosed plastic container. I will probably stick some kind of an aquarium pump in there so it doesn't get stagnant. I don't think I should have a problem but thanks again for pointing it out to me. Happy growing .

Before I started getting distilled water I would put a 5 gallon bucket under the eave of our shed thinking ok water runs off the roof here fast after it stopped raining I went to get some, I seen a rainbow spot like gasoline does on pavement turns out this was chemical runoff from tar and shingles I dumped it and started buying distilled water and occasionally put a container in a open spot when it rained I collected the top layer of snow and melted it then stored it so I had lots of water in the spring

...I'll revive this thread as 'a growth in progress', haha. I'm building another greenhouse/shed. Since I don't have the space that I would like, I have started to build into the sky. Here is the beginning... ...a 12 x 8 shed below, ceiling just under 9 feet, and the attic above, I will call my Observatorium, will be my greenhouse. Everything in the attic will be exposed through the clear roofing material, that's why all lumber has been stained...(shot myself in the foot....again!!!!). This one will be a little more refined than the fiasco I built a couple of years ago. Will post pics when complete, I am quickly running out of time before winter. ...there is and will be a lot more detail with this one. Total height to the top of the peak is just under 16 feet. Angle of roof rafters or trusses (or whatever they're called, I'm not a carpenter) is 59 degrees. Not mitre saw friendly. Thanks for looking! AV.

...Thank You very much for the compliments Gentlemen! Wait 'til you see how I'm gonna finish the outside of the shed itself. It will be the 'stone mason thinks he's a carpenter' finish. I'm shooting myself in both feet now, with a machine gun! Cheers!

Looking well. And you're building fast. Great job. I only have one question, will you have enough light in there ? It seems dark on the photos.

...Shogg, cloudy day. South facing backyard and the greenhouse is in the attic. Twinwall clear roof, more than enough light, probably too much. I will most likely have to put up some kind of shading fabric.
...bince, no they are not. Regular 2x4's stained in Espresso. Everything that will be visible through the clear roofing is/will be stained. As a matter of fact the whole shed will be stained when I am finished. Should make some progress this weekend. Cheers.
