Hi OCPS,
I'm planning to get some aquatic utrics to put in a tank, but since it's required to put peat and sedges on the bottom for acidity and CO2, the water's bound to become brown, right? So I'm wondering if it's possible to grow aquatic utrics in clear water, using CO2 machine and a filter. I still plan to use peat as the bottom substance below the sand, but will the filter take out the acidity? I know U. graminifolia is commonly grown as tank plants, so that has got me thinking it may be possible.
What do you think?
Cheers, Ray.

I've tried all sorts of complicated set-ups. All eventually failed except throwing it into the bottom of my plastic CP terrariums where it is thriving and flowering (U.gibba). Try it, it has the advantage of being stupidly easy: Aquatic utrics for dummies.

If you can establish a tank with water hyacinth or other monocots, it should go through the algae "boom and bust" and then stabilize enough for aquatic utrics. Also, the tank should have a healthy population of fauna as well(copepods, daphnia, certain pond snails, etc) which can be obtained through pondwater or water from an established planted aquarium(local pet store).

Hi Bonfield. Everything you say makes sense and I know you have great success with the aquatics. I've also tried and failed with all your suggestions. However U. gibba is thriving in the bottom of my plastic terraria amongst a slimy mouldy mess which often almost dries up. The water is the runoff from my CP's.

Hi Lloyd, I'm certain your method works perfectly for gibba, I only suggested the hyacinth option in case Ray was just interested in a tank setup. Plus, I've recently grown gibba with the hyacinth and it went so out of control that I attempted(unsuccessfully) to eradicate it, and still have to periodically weed it.

Thanks for the input, guys. I will try all the methods mentioned as I have enough plants to do so.

Ah, also, will u. Gibba and intermedia absolutely need dormancy? Will they be stressed out and die if they are not given one?

U. gibba just needs to be ignored and neglected. As far as I can see it doesn't need any care at all.
