Hi DVG - Thanks! Do you have any experience with the tropical isopods like these? I am thinking about getting some of them when I make an order. Apoplast, I currently culture a couple species of tropical springtails. The first species is Folsomia candida, and this is the most prolific of my springtail feeders. I also culture a springtail commonly called the Giant Springtail - this one is larger than F. candida, faster moving but not quite as prolific. Here is a link to a video of the Giant Springtails, just to show what they look like. shop.bugsincyberspace.com/Giant-Springtail-Feeder-Insects-50-Count-bic651.htmdvg

Salut Shogg - Merci! Sounds like I am getting overly concerned. I should just order the things and be done with it. Okay, I'm doing it tomorrow. Tea leaves eh? I have plenty of those around! Tea leaves work great for me but I really don't think it is a common avenue Initially, I was looking to do a caffeinated compost. Don't know if it change something or if the springtails consume it.

Hi Vraev - Those are some nice shots of the little critters! I had some globular ones I collected, and they didn't do much unfortunately. I'm in the States, and not entirely sure where will ship to Canada. Sorry. I think I'm going to buy my cultures from here. I don't know if they are the best, just priced okay. Good luck and let us know if you get some more - you've got good shots. Hi DVG - I'm not going to know which species, but I am impressed you know which ones you have. The video of the giant spring tails had some awesome dramatic music! They are good size too. Mich have to search them down too. But, I think for not for larger feeders, I'm going to order the isopods. Salut Shogg - Caffeinated compost?! That must make for peppy vegetables! Good to know the springtails can survive tea scraps too.

Hi Apo, sorry...I thought you were from Canada. Since you are in US... check out josh frogs. I know he has cultures. I am going to try a local DFI dart frogs inc and feed my tank with springtails.

Apoplast, I'm finding that it is tricky to find the actual Latin name of these springtail species. And I just noticed that I have a culture of little blue springtails. www.frognet.org/gallery/album83/Blue_springtails_3Not too sure how these got into one of my cultures, but these are supposed to be a temperate species. They look like Folsomia candida, except they are smaller and not white in color. dvg

This thread is very interesting and helpful. Thanks for posting it. Springtails or collembola seem like perfect food for flytrap seedlings as well.
The device you created looks like it works very well Shogg!
Dvg, do by any chance sell/trade springtails from time to time?
