Did you notice that the stamens swirl around after you touch them? Also I saw a variety of hardy opuntia that doesn't have those annoying glochids.

They may have swirled around when i was swirling the Q-tip through them, trying to round up some pollen. A hour hour later they had mostly straightened themselves out again and looked like they had in the previous pics, which surprised me. dvg

Hi DVG,
Nice plant and flower.
I would like to know how to get this kind of plant. When I go to the garden center there's a lot of cacti but they are not labelled so I cannot know what kind of flower will come of them. Do you have any advice ?

The cacti you will see in garden centers will be hardy opuntia which means the stems have the beaver tail configuration. They all have the same flowers. Some will have spines which are no big deal. The little (almost invisible) hairs on the pads (near the spines or by themselves if there are no spines) are really bad. Be very careful not to get them in your skin (almost impossible if you touch the plant) as they are really irritating. Don't even think about getting them on your face.

Beautiful flowers! Are you going to harvest the tuna afterward?

Awesome Doug! Do you know what species it is? My Opuntia humifusa is coming into flower now and I've always wanted to other species native to Canada.

Thanks Shoggoths, i would say your best bet is to check out your local Cactus and Succulent Club or Society. There might very well be a breeder there who keeps track of the flowers produced by their cacti and you could probably get a few pads in the fall after they grow out this summer. In our Cactus Club there is a women who has been hybridizing Opuntia for over 30 years and her Opuntia cacti plants have flowers that include bright pink, red, orange, peach and yellow. Beautiful flowers! Are you going to harvest the tuna afterward? Thanks Cole. Not if it's Blue Fin tuna...that tuna is radioactive! Awesome Doug! Do you know what species it is? My Opuntia humifusa is coming into flower now and I've always wanted to other species native to Canada. Thanks Justin, this plant is a hybrid that i received as a pad from a member of our cactus club. I have a few varieties of native cacti species( Opuntia fragilis ) from around the Edmonton area and another one that i collected up at the Dunvegan Bridge on the mighty Peace River. I'll post a few pics of those when i get a chance. dvg

Awesome pics! My Opuntia have 5 flowers coming up this year. I'll have to get some pics up when it opens. I'm surprised by how well they've done here outside year round. Next year I can probably remove some pads to send to people who want another variety. The 5 plants I got 2 years ago have almost filled a 3x10' garden.

Ok, thanks for the link. I'll check the site and I think I have also found someone growing cacti not far from me.
