How do you grow your U. gibba? Mine is just doing Ok in my 10 gallon aquarium. Definitely not growing like a weed.

Hi lloyd,
Sorry but i do not reveal my secrets. Just kidding. Well this my first time growing my gibba and i know they grow in very acidic places soo i just tried to recreate that. the PH in my tank is around between 5.5 and 6 lots of light at a temp between 20 and 23 max. To get my PH that acid I put a layer of peat moss pellets under the sand. the water I use is distilled water only soo no minerals in it, specially calsium.
lloyd I hope that helps
Let know how your plant does if you decide to change your water quality for the plant.
cheers
Xavier

Hi Xavier, I could try adding peat pellets to my corner filter to lower the pH (tap water here is 7.4). I'm not sure about distilled water as I think the fish need some trace elements in tap water. Also some of the plants like Java fern seem to need fertilizer (I think Iron as Toronto tap water is low in iron.) It would also get sort of expensive to do the weekly water changes (for the fish) with distilled water. Regards, Lloyd

Hi lloyd,
yes totally. Well have you ever thought of putting the gibba by itself? I am growing my gibba with algae eating shrimps, but not fish. gibba could easy grow in a small conteiner.
cheers

Hi Xavier, I did have the gibba by itself but it looked sort of blah. I have enough weird stuff all over the sun room and in the basement. I thought I'd sort of see if I could get the gibba to grow in the aquarium. I put some peat pellets in the corner filter to adjust the pH (and maybe the kH too?) and I'm going to cut the fertilizer in half to see if I can reach a happy medium. Regards, Lloyd

The fish definitely need the minerals in the water that CPs hate. I used to have red darters in my outdoor pond, they are very hardy fish. They would overwinter and spawn in the spring. Now that I use only rainwater the darters are gone. I have to use bacillus to prevent mosquitos, but the plants do well.

CarnyBoy: What type of shrimp do you use in your aquatic utric setup? I have a couple of aquatic species growing in a small aquarium and am getting algar on the sides. I am afraid to use snails, as they might eat the utrics.

Hi Rick,
Rick i got none now they are too hard to keep. what create halgae in the tank is sunlight and alkaline water. under growlights if they are cool white it is fine but if you have sunlight balance bulbs algae will grow a bit. to kill algae fast is to increase the acidity of the water. algae will no grow in acid water. what I use is peat pellets. that will stop the grow of algae. now make sure that the water you using is distilled.
hope that helps

Hi Xavier,
I am getting a thin layer of algae in the tank even though the water is acidic. I only use RO water and I am running a filter on the tank that has a sleeve of peat modd in it, so the water is definitely acidic.
Bummer, isn't it...

that is weird Rick. if that is the case get the plant out of there b4 it get algae on it. and clean the tank. My plant had also lots of algae at some point eventhough the whole bottom of the tank was peat. The algae started when I introduce gravel on top of the peat. minerals will make the water alkaline soo if you have any gravel or rocks in the tank take them out and put a new peat pack. Have you checked the PH of the water lately??
