From humble beginnings, a developing flower highlights the sublime beauty of P. laueana, portending the crimson slashes to follow. dvg

Quite a poetic tribute to what I am sure will be a very nice flower.

Quite a poetic tribute to what I am sure will be a very nice flower. Haha, what can i say...these pings inspire me. ;D Up until recently, i hadn't really tried to pollinate very many of my Pinguicula flowers, but lately i've had success with pollinating some P. lilacina flowers and germinating the seed from those attempts. I attributed that success to the rather roomy interior of the P. liacina flowers and also the relative closeness of the stigma flap to the flower's opening, making for easier working/pollinating conditions This P. laueana flower is currently in the final stages of being fully opened, and i had a closer look at it today to try and determine how difficult this flower might be to pollinate. I was surprised to see the stigma flap was right flush at the throat opening of the flower and that pollen was clearly visible behind the flap, to the left, once i had a closer look. Having everything up front and centre does make for a much easier pollination atempt. dvg

Wow, really nice flower color ! Where do you keep this ping ? With your other ones ? I seems to have more difficulty getting good pollination result in my terrarium vs on my windowsill. I think the higher temp in the terra might be for something... I'll also try to add a fan in the terra soon. It will perhaps help. Let me know how everything went

Very nice dvg, you can already see the stigma is nice and sticky!

Thanks guys, Shoggoths, i grow my pings in the basement under lights, and only keep my seedlings and developing leaf pulls inside a vented propagation chamber. A freshly pollinated flower. Yesterday the pollen didn't release onto the toothpick, but today the toothpick picked the pollen up well and i was able to dab quite a bit of pollen onto the stigma. dvg

Hi Doug - Nice flower. Sorry I didn't say so earlier. I missed the post somehow. Excellent job with the pollination. It sounds like Mexi pings are self fertile within a single flower, like orchids. Is that true? If so, that's not that common across plants and very interesting.

Is that true? If so, that's not that common across plants and very interesting. Thanks Apoplast, I agree that most mexi-ping species should be self fertile, although i have heard a rumor of some P. laueana clones not be being fertile because of some t/c issues interfering with the plant's pollen, so future pollination success could hinge on the propagation and cultural conditions the hopeful candidates were raised in prior to flowering... ...that is why pollinating these flowers and growing them out from seed will be such a fascinating experience with the slight species variation in morphology being displayed in the seedling progeny, and also eliminating t/c and all of it's associated problems from the equation. dvg

After attempting to pollinate this P. laueana flower for about three or four days in a row, and having the flower remain solidly atop its scape for close to a week after my attempts, the bloom is finally off of the flower and this swollen seed pod is what's left to show for my efforts. Hopefully, i'll be able to harvest some viable seed from this plant...i'd love to have some unique P. laueana seedlings, especially seedlings from a plant that doesn't mind flowering. dvg

I don't know how I missed the successful pollination update. That's fantastic! Nicely done! And thanks for the pictures of the developing fruit. As someone who has never pollinated a ping before, it's interesting to see the progression.
