Nice plants. I've been struggling with this species and the small round pings in general. Looks like you have it in a 100% mineral mixture. And do you keep it on the drier side?

Yes, i do use an all mineral mix and have even seen some members here succeed with just straight perlite. I keep my pings in shallow dishes and refill the dishes a few days after all of the water has evaporated. Mexican Pings can easily go a few weeks without refilling those dishes. dvg

This pot of pings was fed recently; they grew and then i noticed that their leaf shape had changed. They went from spoon shaped to more of a triangular look. Guess that's what happens when ya get too many pings in a pot...they go all fang and claw on each other. dvg

Great pings dvg. Ive noticed this change in leaf shape with other similar species (ehlersiae and jaumavensis).

I like the new leaves more than before. I hope to make a big pot of pings like this some day. . . It looks amazing.

Hi Doug - Thanks for the tips for growing the small pings on the drier side (in response to Hal's great question)! Seems I think I need to modify my set up a little bit to get better results. I let them go dry but I might keep them from sitting in water and do some over head watering (except then I'm out of town, and back to the bottle with the hole in the bottom).

Thanks for the comments guys! Great pings dvg. Ive noticed this change in leaf shape with other similar species (ehlersiae and jaumavensis). This species seems to convert from the roundish leaves to the more triangular shaped leaves once the rosettes nudge up against one another. Apoplast, if you grow mexi-pings more like a cactus, you'll be on the right track with them. dvg

Hi Doug - Got it! Not that my plants have done badly, but I think it's time for some major repotting.

Another update on some of these P. esseriana Giant form. These are not so much like slimy lettuce, but more akin to a succulent cabbage. dvg
