Thanks. The only problem is that the cheapest kit they have is $11500.00.

There are some good threads in this forum. I would browse through them. If you are a do it yourselfer you can make your own kit. Make a glove box. A lot of stuff like forceps are available cheap if you look around. Find new parents for baby food bottles. You might want some PPM to start with ($30 for a sample size-goes a long way). Get a 15 PSI pressure cooker (under $100 if you buy new or get an old one from family, friends or Kijiji). Or do microwave sterilization of medium. When you are ready, have Phytotech send you an order of caps and medium, likely under $50 (by USPS). Add a few $ for Shoppers for various chemicals and away you go. The glove box and pressure cooker aren't in any kits so I don't know how much they save.

Thanks Lloyd. So how much do you think everything will cost together? Under $200 perhaps?
I was originally going to ask for a kit for my birthday, but maybe I should ask for baby food jars and a pressure cooker; lol, then I will get the rest myself.

Devon: the glove box is cheap to make yourself. A laminar flow hood you can make if you're serious later on for ~ $250. The 15 psi pressure cooker you can try to scrounge. I bought a Presto one from USA new fairly cheap. Get a cooker with easily available parts so you can get a used one and just replace all the seals, pressure adjusters and valves for under $30. It's also fun to cook with one of these! Or go the microwave route to start off cheap. The alcohol lamp, forceps, beakers, flasks, graduated cylinders, pipettes I buy at a surplus store in downtown Toronto. You can get by with kitchen stuff at first, like measuring spoons and cups. Most of the chemicals you can buy at Shoppers. Use a cigarette lighter and alcohol to sterilize. Make an order at Phytotech to get the media and odds and ends. You can even get some starter hormones and vitamines etc. from Phytotech to make the most of postage. Buy the sensitive chemicals in the winter to limit spoilage by USPS. Maybe a small scale down to 1 mg and pH tape (pH 4-7), later on a cheap pH meter (under $30).
Most important: start small and cheap, scrounge around. But I would go with Phytotech and maybe PPM at the beginning to make it easier. Start with seeds and only much later on go with explants. As you get better and start to enjoy TC more, consider adding stuff to make it easier. If you do buy a kit make sure it wouldn't be cheaper to just buy the stuff I outlined above.

Thanks for the help... +1!
I will start with mostly seeds at first, but it is acceptable if I try 1 or 2 explants, right? I know that there is a lot of sterilizing to do.

Of course, try the explants. But they are hard. Emotionally it's better to start with seeds. Then when you get some success and some technique you'll be ready for the harder explants. You don't want to have too much failure at first as you may become discouraged and give up. Phytotech has some specific media for CP's by the way. I may be able to help you with media to start up with, let me know when you're ready.

Sorry to bring up this old thread. I have just ordered the "Basic Kitchen Culture Kit" and 30 vessels to finally get started on TC. It appears to come with everything needed to have a decent start. Any thoughts? *edit* I ordered here: www.kitchenculturekit.com/index.htm

In the past you could have a 10$ reduction on this kit if you were a member of the www.world-of-carnivores.net/steralizecuttings.htmlforum. I don't know if it still work. I was looking for this kit too but when I checked it, it seems shipping fee were pretty high. *Edit* It seems to be 48$ shipping fee for me. How much does it cost you ?
