Has anyone found a new replacement for no damp? Or have any ideas on how to prevent root rot? I have a few neps that are going a bit downhill and the medium is kept pretty wet all the time. I water once a day but may have to cut that back considerably to prevent further loss. Any ideas?

I can't believe they took it off the market either, it's as bad an environmental regulation as allowing those "eco-friendly" pesticides which indiscriminately kill pollinators alongside the pests. What is your current substrate recipe? If the pots are kept constantly moist, with good ambient humidity, maybe a more porous mixture and occasional dilute applications of sulfur-based fungicides will do until we can find a way around those pesky bans, lol.

By the way, why is this section only visible to those who are logged in? It seems to me that everyone having access to disease/pest control info would only be of benefit to the entire community, if only to prevent accidental spread of unwanted weeds, parasites, etc. Just sayin' lol

I seem to remember seeing No Damp very recently at a Home Depot nearby. Do you want me to look? I also still have a bottle at home.

I am at a point where I don't know what else to use. My medium is just LFS and thats it so it stays real wet for a long time. I lost (but took cuttings from before it died) my N. Truncata and I have 2 others that are not loving it at the moment and to be honest with you the roots may already be toast as they seem to be dying from the bottom up (although typically neps seem to lose their lower leaves as they get bigger and that may be the case but I doubt it since the signs of each look very similar. I would appreciate very much Lloyd if you could check out your local HD for me!

That sucks Rug. I really hope you can salvage your cuttings.
I use a mix of LFS, Perlite and Bark (1:1:1) for some neps and it works well. I water them every 2 days or so. However, I also have some plants in pure LFS and they only get watered every 4 or 5 days. The Raff (which I got from you rug) i keep more wet than the others and it seems to like it. For the other ones in pure LFS, I wait until the top is dry and then stick my finger in the soil a bit to see how moist it is below the surface. If it still feels wet, I wait a day then water. I'm afraid of overwatering them so I may tend to underwater slightly. I used to flood the pots when I watered but I dont think the plants liked it much so now I tend to just poor enough to wet the surface and have some flow out the bottom. The plants seem to like it more.

My raff from Rug also is kept SUPER wet all the time (like, in 2" of water) and it seems to prefer things that way.
If I go by a HD in the next few days I will look for ya too...

I've mentioned before that thymol, an extract of Thyme and used in Listerine (0.64mg/ml) is a strong antifungal. If anybody wants to try some, I have a lot of it.

This is in reply to my email. Everybody who lives near a Rona should phone and buy up the remaining stock. We've only got till the end of the year. My local Rona is already out. www.rona.ca/shop/~fungicide-no-da....plus-64032_shop Thank you for your inquiry. Regrettably, Plant-Prod NO Damp is a discontinued product. This is due to the manufacture of the active ingredient withdrawing their support in Canada, resulting in the loss of the registration. We ceased production a few years ago and had to deplete all of our stock by Dec 31, 2008. The registration will run out completely at the end of this year, on Dec 31, 2010, at which time it will be illegal to sell the product in Canada. At this time we do not have a product to replace it with and we do not know of anyone who may have stock left. Damping off is a fungal disease, Rhizoctonia root rot (Rhizoctonia solani), which attacks the seedlings at the soil line, withering the stem and causing the seedling to fall over and die. The best prevention for this disease is cleanliness! We recommend using a soilless growing medium, preferably one containing a high percentage of peat moss, as it naturally inhibits damping-off. Soilless mixes such as peat moss / vermiculite are best. Planting containers should be new or thoroughly cleaned before re-using, washed with hot soapy water and then rinsed with a solution of 1 part chlorine bleach to 10 parts water. Avoid overcrowding the seedlings and overwatering. A small fan circulating the air in the seed-starting area can be very helpful. Any stress that may weak the seedlings, such as poor lighting, high temperatures, or improper watering, will make them more susceptible. If only a few seedlings are affected, you may be able to remove them and save the rest. Take care when removing them and make sure the soil around them does not contaminate the surrounding cells. I hope this helps. If you should have any further questions or concerns regarding this or any of our products please feel free to contact me. I think I got the last bottle, they said it was already mailed: 200 ml. Hopefully it will get here. Just like Rona, they never had any No-Damp at all, just never updated their website. How annoying. It's like the cheese store skit on Monty Python only not funny.
