I was thinking of making a small bog on my apartment patio. I was thinking of something like 30x30x?. Do I just let the rain water it or do I still have to use distilled water? Also, should I use something around the bog to ensure no animals have a free lunch on me? Last but probably not lease which types of CPs should I put in it considering the space available.

Rain water works just fine. I use it all the time. In your bog, you can use such as S. flava, S. Judith Hindle, S. purpurea purpurea, S. leucophylla, S. oreophila, P. vulgaris, D. rotundifolia, D. filliformis, D. intermedia and even D. anglilica. You need to mulch the bog with lots of pine needles and snow for it to make it through the winter. They love lots of sun.

rain water is good, but in dry spells you will have to still water, and if you dont have a reserve of rain water, distilled it is, but remember, tap water is better then no water! as for plants, just remember that because its elevated and dosnet have the ground to insulate it, you may want to start with the hardiest plants, like purp ssp. purp and flavas. insulating around the container would help too. Thanks for the advice Syb. I think that very soon I will start to pick up some of the plants mentioned so that around April my son and I can start on the bog.

I'd suggest in winter you put it up against the house, then mulch it well. The heat from the house will keep it from getting really cold.

Thanks for the advice Hal. That project is going to have to wait until summer, but in the meantime I am going to do a few average sized terrarium/aquarium setups with my son.
