Pine needles are acidic and im sure your rain/snow water is as well, but they dont leech other stuff (from what ive seen) into the water but they do ensure the water is pretty acidic (5.5 or so on the ph scale)
IF you have a pine tree and notice the ground under the tree is all dead, thats cause the dead needles make the ground really acidic and its hard for grass to grow. Apparently adding a base (baking soda) will neutralize it and allow your grass to grow better under the tree.
But like I said earlier, the snow I get is from around pine trees and its PH is ideal! And infact my water still has needles in it and my plants get a needle or two in their pots.

Hi Leny,
The instructions says that you need to change the cartridge when it turns purple. It also depends on your tap water TDS content. In canada, there's nothing to worry about. I have been monitoring my use and I got around 60 gallons so far and it's still doing great. I test the TDS everytime I use it. This stuff is awesome.
