Took 2 weeks for contamination to show. Might be from inside the seed coat. Lloyd mentioned to remove the seed coat but the seeds are too small for me. I will try to rescue them tonight. And that's how the cookie crumbles....

Hackerberry, although the vft seeds seem small, if you employ the use of some magnifying lenses, especially the ones that strap to your head, you'll find that makes the small things more manageable. They sell these at craft stores. Lee Valley Tool also sells magnifying lamps...a large magnifying glass as well as a built in florescent lamp, to light up the image you are observing. I actually use both of the above magnifying systems in tandem, for very fine work. If you soak the vft seed for a day, that should soften the seed coat sufficiently, so that you may etch the seed coat with a new scalpel blade, and then carefully and steadily peel or squeeze the seed out. Once you have done a few and have a system in place, it'll be a breeze.

That is an awesome advice! I will do that right away and re-sterilize the seeds. Cross fingers! Thanks dvg!!!

When I had infected seeds, I just took them out and planted them in LFS. I found about 1/4 showed infection when they germinated. If you have PPM in the medium, the rest of the bottle might be Ok. I try to take a little divot out with the infected seed to remove all the infection. If you want to rescue an infected seed for TC, try cleaning it and soaking it for 4 hours in 4% PPM with MS.
I may try soaking my seeds with 4% PPM, MS, and the recommended strength of No-Damp.

Success on the other seeds that I TC'd. A small plantlet is already showing up for my Gardenia seeds in TC. No contamination so I guess I'm doing the right thing. I'll take some pictures when it shows some true leaves. weeeehh!!!!!

Finally got my seeds in TC to germinate without contamination. This one is a tropical. I just found that the VFT seeds the DVG gave me started to germinate. I will post the VFT pic later.

HB, great job on getting your tc to work for you. You haven't been doing it for too long...how easy was it to do. It looks like a great way to start seeds and spread plants. ;D Keep up the good work!

Thanks dvg! It's pretty easy especially with the member's advice. Constant email exchange with lloyd and the rest of the peeps in the forum. I see that the most successful technique is the most simple steps.

Congrats HB on the success. I see some germination from my first attempt at TC, but only the Sarra seed. I still don't see any germination of the Dionaea seed yet, but it's only been 3 weeks now. I won't declare a failure until a couple months has passed without germination. What did you use for your media? I used 50% MS. I was wondering if I should have done 33% MS.
The explants I did at the same time aren't looking so good. I got a bit of contamination, and some phenolic oxidation, but a lot of them seemed to be ok, but now they're mostly black. I'm not optimistic at this point about their chances at success and I might have to wait until spring to get good tissue to try again. I can't wait!

Hello flytrapcare,
I used 50% MS, sugar and some PPM [just in case, hehe] for the seeds. No luck with the explant. Like you, it turned black but it's the first time i tried it. I think I know how to deal with it now. Congrats on your Sarr seeds! For the VFT, if it took me 6 weeks to germinate it and I found that they like to be under a bright light to start the process. Post some pics!

Thanks hackerberry! I can't wait to give the explants another go. I was amazed by the fact that I didn't have any media contamination in any of the jars. There were 3 seed jars that got contamination because I didn't sterilize the seeds very well and a few of the explants were contaminated too, but all of the contamination started with either the seed or the explant, not from the media. I guess my sterile technique was good.
