Hey all, I'm pretty new to CP'ing, and I've been reading in the forums about people asking what type of sand to use. Some of the answers are: silica, sandblasting, etc... So I decided to try the free way, play sand, 2 1/2 gallons of it Well, I havn't used it yet, but I did wash it to get rid of all the bad stuff... I started yesterday and washed it for about an hour, then dried it out. I figured today, I wanted to make sure it was good and clean, so I added water and magically the sand disapeared really quikly within the murk So, another 3 hours today washing until it came clean, I'll probably try again tomorrow ugh.. Anyways, with all that said, good comes from the less fortunate. My limited recommendation is the extra expense of already washed sand, as it's a good thing I only got 2 1/2 gallons of mine Experience is excellent, you learn what your NOT going to do next time

You might want to do the vinegar test- put vinegar on a spoonful of sand and if it bubbles, it's no good for CPS- just a hint as most sand will kinda kill most CPs

I tried that, no bubbles. I did't have regular vinegar though, I used apple cider vinegar instead. Hope it works the same, if not I'll be getting some on friday.
What exactly is the vinegar bubbling with?? I tried regular table salt which didn't bubble either.

I bought pool filter sand which is quartz (silica) and it was just as cheap as play sand for 50lbs of it. It cost me like $6 at the most!

I haven't been able to find a nice gritty sand in Toronto, say around 0.8 mm silica. I found some fine gravel (granite, I think) at an aquarium store but it's too expensive for outdoor setups. The pool filter sand here is way too fine.

I got it at Target building center. They had a skid that was about 15ft tall of the stuff and its a larger grain as well. Its I'd say close to .030" (.8 for you metric heads). I like the size of it cause it allows for better aeration and it mixes well with the peat (as in its very visable particles). That white lightening sand was expensive for some reason (from what I hear anyway)

I wash my sand and test the wash water for TDS to be safe.

Vraev: Here's some sand sources in Hamilton & Mississauga
Bell and Mackenzie:
500 Sherman Ave., N., Box 844, LCD #1 Hamilton, ON , L8N 3N9 Phone: 905-527-6000
" I think a good silica sand that we have would be our #16 Silica sand. It is a white, angular and very inert. In fact it is a very popular pool filter silica sand. You could find it at a local pool supplies store or our closest stocking supplier in Toronto would be Webster & Sons in North Mississauga. Their phone # is 905-564-3219"
