For me, I bought a couple of bags of that compressed, dried New Zealand LFS and planted my cobras and D. adelae in it. Within a reasonable period of time, dormant spores in the moss came to life.
I have had a similar experience with the LFS from Chile. Additionally, about 4 little sarracenia seedlings have germinated in the stuff, and I don't have the foggiest idea where they came from, as I have never had sarracenia seed in my home.

Okay, well, I got my moss from Rick, so the NZ stuff is what I have and it grows very well.
Sounds like a single bale should get anyone started.
Them Sarrs you got poppin up are a real puzzle, Rick, in a couple of years we'll have a better idea of WTF is goin on there

Hey guys, anyone of you have some red sphagnum live?? I think the one I have is what I got from Rick Keehn when I requested some live moss to start off. I think he said it was newzealand sphagnum cristatum. I lost a lot due to lack of water, repotting and all... but it grows pretty well around plants than alone. I guess its the microenvironment that really helps it....not too much light, the right humidity and so on. Guys, if anyone of u have a bunch of live red sphag, please give me a fist full or maybe even less, just to get started. thanks, varun

I can find some very easily, working in bogs most of my days. But would you like some coarse and red moss (S. magellanicum) or smaller one (most common would be S. rubellum)?

This looks like the moss that I got from Hawaiian Botanicals. $8 for a 4L Zip-lock bag. Kind of a lot for a small collection, but very good, and many different kinds of mosses.

I'm glad I found this thread - I'm going to follow flytraps advice and throw some of my sphag into a plastic ziplock bag and chuck it underneath some lights...wish me luck!

Well! Sure...it will help....but it will take a while to start like that. I suggest that the best way to start getting sphagnum is to get a LIVE sample. So either :
1) Buy some from macrovulgaris 2) Buy some from hawaiian botanicals 3) Wait till spring when some of us here have extra [in the meanwhile trying your luck with the dried sphag]
This is basically because I was like you a year ago....on the lookout for moss everywhere. However....once I got more neps and I used it as a top dressing. I guess I never ever need any more "Start" samples. [But remember...it can be high maintenance when used as a mix or top dressing,,,, regular misting is absolutely necessary or else moss goes white...then brown.] Basically I would say....get a sample...then put that in a plastic ziploc bag with some distilled water....put it near some bright shaded light (as flytrap said...don't throw it in the sun as that might cook the moss). And within a few months...the bag will become full.
