my N.ventricosa is FLOWERING!! In almost 3 years I've never had one do this- I figure asking about pollen can't hurt, I am just happy to finally see a flower, but I figured that if anyone had any extra pollen from something that might make a good cross, I could try it and split up whatever seeds I end up with... How long do I have to get it pollinated- the flower is still pretty much a little bunch of green knobs and loks to be a week or more away from actually being "ready" (tho being totally new to it, I don't actually know for sure)
Any suggestions?? Or does anyone have any pollen and want to try a cross??

are you sure your ventricosa is female? Neps are either male or female. Sib

I am pretty sure it's a "he" just cos that's likely what it is, which is why I made the topic read "female pollen" cos I'm pretty sure "Bill" (yes we named him) is a man-nepenthes... Sorry for the confusion

Im confused . If "Bill" is a male plant why do you want pollen(males produce it) There is no "female" pollen. If you have a female plant then you want male pollen My head hurts

LOL your post was confusing, it contradicted you topic! Males produce pollen, females have stigma(which are the receptors for pollen). It'll be alright boondude! Try PFT, I noticed on their forum lately there have been a few requests for pollen. Sib

OOOhhhh... see I knew I had something wrong, I need whatever a presumably male plants does NOT have but needs in order to make seeds, sorry all I will check around, I guess, it's not really important, just wanted to try to make some seeds if it wasn't gonna be too complicated

Male plants cannot make seed, they can only make pollen. You need to get into contact with someone who has a female plant (which cannot produce pollen, but with pollen can produce seed). Usually you send them pollen and in a month or so, they send you a bunch of seed. Sib

My big ventricosa is in flower too! I can't believe it! The stalk was 'hiding' behind some frilly curtains at the top of the window and I just noticed this morning. The flolwers haven't opened yet so I haven't missed it yet. How do I 'sex' my plant? I don't know the difference between male and female but so far the flowers are just red balls on the stalk. If I take a picture can anyone tell now or should I wait until they open?

AHHH thanks Sib, I kinda figured after some deep thought that the male would not make seeds, I don't know how I missed that detail ad that's how "sexed" plants usually work... so then I guess I have pollen to offer.... OK I think I finally got it Don't mind me, I'm slow And Hpulley, I can't see how a pic would hurt, at this time, you might as well go for it, but congrats on the flowering either way, I know I am well pleased even if it doesn't actually amount to anything...

I can tell forsure when it's open, possibly in bud aswell.... For those of you with "The Savage Garden" turn to page 244 for a picture of a male flower! I seam to recall seeing a comparison pic in one of my books, perhaps I will look later on, I'll let you know if I find it and which book, thanks, Sib

Nep pollen can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 years. Wrap it up in aluminum foil and keep it dry. Make sure you don't freeze it.
My Nep pollen has been viable for years after I collected it. Only one thought - after years of growing CPs, a lot of newer CP enthusiast would cross pollinate any whichever species that have males and females blooming concurrently. I would like to impart a bit of thought that it's best to keep the species line clean (ie. try your best not to cross pollinate different species unless you sort of understand what sort of offspring you're trying to "create".
Once I get my website really fixed up, I will post a bunch of photos of how some of the cross-species ended up looking... I have a nice collection of images from the Fullerton Arboretum where my old friend Leo Song had once looked after (with some fairly weird cross breeds).
I've got a few Neps spiking blooms...can't remember if they're male or female. One last thought - don't keep the growing environ in which the male bloom is in too humid, or else you may get very little (or none) pollen.

The flower stalk is quite high, well out of the open window box so it should be fairly dry. I'll try to save some pollen in case anyone needs it, perhaps even me in the future depending on the sex of the other plant I have.

Harry-
My N Ventricosa is also in bloom. I'll have a close look with my tired eyes to see if it's a she or a he. If it's a She...then we may be able to do the over the mail pollen dating service...
and then we can split the seeds 50:50 or 40:40:20 with the 20 going to the OCPS forum board or something.
