I am looking for some good books on CPs for myself. I already have soem general books, so I am looking for more plant-specific books. For example, a good book just on Nepenthes in habitat and/or in culture, a good one on sundews, or something like that. I was looking at some that I thought were good, and I'd like your comments on them:
Nepenthes of Borneo by Charles Clarke (actually anything by him) Anything by Stewart McPherson
Any comments? I just read a review of Stewrt McPherson's DVD 'Lost Worlds' that sounds pretty good too. 'Growing Carnivorous Plants' by Barry Rice also looks like a good one, although it is a more general book. Any other suggestions?
Also, let me know where I can get these books. Not all are readily available, I have found.
I already have: Pitcher Plants of the Americas by Stewart McPherson The Savage Garden by Peter D'Amato Carnivorous plants of the United States and Canada by Donald Schnell Carnivorous Plants of the World by James and Patricia Pietropaolo

Thanks for the links lloyd, but I had already been to orchidsbooks.com for this, but it was $70, and wondered if it was worth it. Some of his other smaller books are cheaper, but I'd like something substantial, I think, but I'd like some people views who already have them. Hadn't checked the 'Lost Worlds' site in a while, so thanks for that one! Is 'Growing Carnivorous Plants' better than 'Savage Garden'? How does it compare? Since I already have 'Savage Garden', I don't want to dublicate if I don't have to.
I will ask Ken

Growing carnivorous plants is an amazing book IMO. I had savage garden for 3 hrs before I sent it back to amazon the day I got it. I didn't really like savage garden. However...the day I got growing carnivorous plants by Barry Rice...it was a keeper. I really really want to get NEPENTHES OF BORNEO and Sumatrain penunsula. However...do the math.... 60$ + 100$ + shipping [probably 30$] is a looooooot of money. Lol! Instead I could get myself a nepenthes jamban or a N x trusmadiensis lol!

I still like Savage Garden for the practical advice. Growing CP's is a very different book -more information. For a CP addict (like me) any CP book is great. I could look at the pictures and read little bits before going to bed. Both books sat at my bedside for months. I try to limit buying books to stuff I really "need" as otherwise I would get carried away.

hmm....yeah! I guess I agree in the terms that one should limit themself to the book style they prefer when in a tight budget. Books like nepenthes of borneo are scientific in nature that they have full descriptions of the plants wiht possibly only pics of plants in nature without too much info about cultivating them. These books are good if you want to try pioneering your own solution based on info from the wild. However....books like growing CP and savage garden are good as guides to help you get a basic understanding on how to grow carnivorous plants. I.e., they are more focused on the cultivation of those plants than on wild info.

It sounds like 'Growing Carnivorous Plants' is a good one.
Does anyone have any of Charles Clarke's books and could give me their review of them? I would go for one of his smaller ones, but I dont' know if they would have a whole lot of info. 'Nepenthes of Borneo' is way bigger than any of these, so what does it have that the others don't?
Are there any other books out there that I may have missed?

The small books are apparently more "tour guides" with basic info. I never seen em.....but I can expect that. Personally I think its a waste of money. I would rather go for the 200 pg nep of borneo book. But once again....don't expect too much cultivation info on it there. Its more of a scientific info on natural habitats and stuff...descriptions of nepenthes species etc. Growing CP as I said is a lot more well rounded book. Gives a very good overview on CPs. IMO it is a MUST gET.

I'm sorry I haven't chipped in here before this. I've been both very busy and very sick lately and haven't had much time to do anything. IMHO Growing Carnivorous Plants is a great book. I think it surpasses Savage Garden (which I think is wonderful). The small Charles Clarke books are nice to have, but not really essential. I would save up and get the big books if I were you. I have had them in the past and they are worth it, although they are more weighted to the natural history of nepenthes than cultivating them.

Thanks Ken. Yeah, I think I will get 'Growing Carnivorous Plants'. I figured that a big book like 'Nepenthes of Borneo' would not be a cultivation book, rather a book on the genus, and it's natural habitat, which I like. Maybe I'll get both!

The House Plant Expert ******** by DR. D. G. Hessayon
its a good book very descriptive and helpful i just bought it yesterday at your ordinary bookstore
it has larger sections on Bromialiads, also everyones fav orchids and even mentions insectivores(carnivours) then everything inbetween lots n lots of coloured pics and good info on any indoor grown plant, also excellent pest control sections, and just lots of easy leaning of the natural envir of plants made very easy ( say for dummies) then there prob 20 more books which get more specific on all types of grow situations (container, revival, greenhouse, rock and water which prob has more mentions of carnivours, and may more seems like a good line of books

My wife calls the books with the large colour pictures.... "plant porn"... the book that has answered all my growing concerns is Savage Garden.

I actually have 'The House Plant Expert'. A good general book on all house plants. 'The Savage Garden' was my first book on Carnivorous Plants. Excellent. Although, some say that Barry Rice's 'Growing Carnivorous Plants' is better - I'll have to see.
