Hey everyone! Thought I'd introduce myself here!
I live in Toronto, and I’m a graduate student at the university. My main interest is orchids, but I think I’ve been bitten by the carnivorous plant bug recently! As with growing any specialized plant group, I know there’s going to be lots of read, so I look forward to learning from all of you experts! It’s great that this resource is available for us canucks! Happy growing!

Hey! I'm at UT right now kd - I'm learning that for a lot of people cps and orchids come hand in hand. What do you grow?

Hi there Calvin, welcome to OCPS! Oh, orchids! I started with them in my youth! I loved Paphs and Cymbs and Cattleya and Dendrobium and...and... I was a little naive to believe they would do it on my windowsill! Hahaha...I grew species, no easy hybrids! Today I don´t grow a single one anymore, which is very sad! I hope I´ll have the opportunity to grow them again one day. I too think that orchids and CPs would be good friends! Kindest regards, Andreas

Thanks, Flytrap, for the warm welcome! This is a great place - I'm really excited about my seed order and my subsequent plant orders in the spring although I'm sure I'll have a billion and one questions, so I'll have to thank you all in advance for tolerating them...I'll try to keep the stupid ones to a minimum. Andreas - I have seen your photos in the gallery (and couldn't stop drooling of course)- actually I stumbled upon your beautiful photos of heliamphora online maybe half a year ago, which is what started me thinking about going for CPs a little more seriously! (I've had one or two periodically during the last 10 years..they're all deceased, sadly). So you were a species snob, eh? I'm becoming one myself! heh heh kd - thanks for the link to the post

Thanks for the generous offer, mabudon! =D I just bought a new $22 wooden grow rack for CPs so they won't have to fight with my orchids for space! I also saw some nepenthes and flytraps for 8.99 at home depot...they looked quite healthy (must be a new shipment) but all the traps were closed so I was weary. No idea what the typical prices for these plants are

closed traps aren't a biggie, I find on some plants if you bump the trey they will close, or at night. Gennerally speeking, with all non CP growers (which is where they are mass produced and retailed) there is going to be some TLC required to bring that plant to it's poential. The price sounds average for the neps, VFT are usually less. I bought mine direct from colisanties, so they were half that hehe. Sib

calorchis - you got Nepenthes at Home Depot?! I guess that's not unusual for Toronto, but it's rare to see that here. I'll go check and see if Winnipeg stores got any in. What kinds are they? Are they named? Do you know what company they are from? Probably all the same kinds that are usually sold here, along with the VFTs, the unnamed Sarracenia, and unnamed Drosera. I'll probably have to wait until spring to see any of that stuff.

Thanks jay Syble - I didn't even know this Colisantie's place exists! It's far, but definitely worth making a trip out to in spring/summer....now I have another event to look forward to Kd - yeah I think there was a name...I remember I specifically looked for one, but I don't remember whether I found one or not (no space for no NOIDs I'm afraid) Don't remember the company but it had these cartoons of man-eating trees and stuff.....
