Hi guys, I noticed that in my terrarium...the pings are quite clean. however, the bud which I am growing in a small tub seems to always have like small black dots .. not much bigger than a period. I thought maybe it was some of the peat dust sprayed over when I sprayed water. However, I tried cleaning off the leaf so that it is clean and today when I see again...it has the black dots. FINALLY, I noticed that a couple of the dots started moving :S . They are really small now.....again as I said the size of this period. So I am wondering, is this a spider mite problem or a aphid problem? If it is either one....it will also explain the problem with the VFT's which I have been having....the B52 leaf problems. However, I dont know how severe the infestation is as in the terrarium, the pings show minimal of these dots and i don't actually see anything on the VFT's. The dots seem black in colour. If it is an infestation....what should I do :S ? I have to wait till april 20 when I can go back home and then use new peat and all....but it will be good ot prepare. I have neem oil. cheers, varun BTW:: If i do replant all...I am guessing that i will pobably use seperate pots from now on.

Spider mites are a light tan to yellowy colour , thrip are a dark brown , could you take a close up photo of the bug in question?

I have no camera that can do that ...those things as I said seem like dust particles....exactly the size of this period . I could only see them moving with a magnifying glass. The terrarium seems ok btw....I noticed the pings are clean in there. One thing I just noticed....the ping is starting to get holes in its leaves....there are like bite marks.....like tiny chunks taken off.

Do the drowning thing. I had aphids on a pirouette. I finally put it in a cup of water. I tried checking it every other day or so and pick the little bastards off but they just kept coming back. I had it in the water for about 5 days. No more aphids. If the leaves are getting holes in them it’s a bug you don’t want. Wash the dirt off the roots first. The trick with bugs is, get rid of them before everything is infested.

spider mites don't leave bite mark damage but fine webbing shoud be visible , thrip leave droppings that look like periods, fungus gnatts are small and can do some damage like that , hard to say with out seeing it

Sounds like the ping is just doing a dormancy-related thing- when mine form winter buds, the old leaves break up like old cheddar kinda.. that could be the case there

THEY DO MOVE GUYS! I just picked off a couple from the leaf...they are kinda round....very very very tiny legs....very very tiny. they move reasonabily fast. I am pretty sure the damage that i see wasn't there when I took it out of the terrarium. this tub I planted it in has soil from waaay back...its like a containment unit. I don;t know if there are any in the terrarium and I sure hope there aren't.. OOOO!!! I noticed something..they seem to be able to jump....This one i noticed was the size of a springtail.....but was brown blac (an adult springtail ) ....but I AM PRETTY SURE.... some black dots were inanimate and a couple were moving. NOW...unless the black dots are the ping digesting the springtail and its remnants left??.... I also noticed a baige colour dots which kinda look like droppings. Anyways...there is still new growth coming from the plant. this is the one in question. Sorry guys I even used a magnifying glass to get that pic. I know that these pics aren't useful...but if u see there is still new growth coming...so its not too bad...maybe the puncture was a mishap with the tweezers (they are pretty sharp) . I will watch out for any more signs and let you know. But what do we know based on the size and description? ... period sized......blackish...round to springtail shape...ALLL OVER A PInG's leaf......on new leaf on top...they seemed to be stationary...on the bottom dead leaf which is dying..there was movement. img412.imageshack.us/img412/7893/2703072053pb4.jpg

I would get the low strength Neem recipe out and spray the whole plant on the underside of the leaves too. I don't think it needs to be repotted.

cool! I am not too worried about this one,,,,so I guess I will try it. I'll do it after my exams. In the meanwhile I can asses how bad the damage can get.
BTW...how can I spray its underside without unpotting it :S ...its too small :S . and since its a ping...the leaves are kinda thick so u can't like move the leaf like in a regular plant.

I gently lift the leaves up and just get the mist in the general area.
